What Is Multi Media Filter Water Treatment?
Multi media filters are high-efficiency water treatment devices that combine multiple layers of filter media made of different materials (including anthracite, quartz sand, magnetite, activated carbon, ceramics, etc.) to effectively remove silt, suspended solids, colloids, and some organic matter from water through physical filtration and adsorption. Relying on high-quality carbon steel or stainless steel materials and advanced process design, they ensure stable and long-lasting filtration effects, resulting in clear and transparent water that meets various water treatment needs. For wastewater with low total suspended solids (TSS) content, multi media water filters can be used for primary treatment. After primary treatment such as inclined plate clarifiers, multi-media filters are also an excellent secondary treatment method.

To meet the personalized needs of customers, COYON provides professional, customized multi media filter water treatment services. Whether it's adjusting the filter media combination scheme, upgrading equipment materials, or integrating automated control systems, we can tailor the optimal solution according to the user's actual operating conditions and water quality conditions, ensuring stable and efficient equipment performance.
How Does Multi Media Filter Water Treatment Work?
Wastewater enters the filter tank from the top. As the wastewater flows downwards through the filter media, solid particles are trapped within the media layer, while the water flows through. Clean water is discharged through the outlet for further treatment or discharge. As solid particles accumulate on the filter media, the pressure inside the filter increases. When the pressure reaches a certain level, the filter media becomes saturated and backwashing is required. Backwashing reverses the water flow direction, washing one filter at a time. Water enters from the bottom of the container, causing the filter media to expand and release the trapped solid particles. After all filters have been backwashed, they are restored to their initial filtration capacity.

The filter layer design of a multi media water filter mainly considers the following factors:
1. Different filter media have significant density differences, ensuring that no mixing occurs after backwashing disturbance.
2. Select filter media based on the purpose of water production.
3. The particle size requirement is that the particle size of the lower layer filter material is smaller than that of the upper layer filter material to ensure the effectiveness and full utilization of the lower layer filter material.
In fact, taking a three-layer filter bed as an example, the upper layer filter material has the largest particle size and is composed of lightweight filter materials with low density, such as anthracite and activated carbon; The middle layer filter material has a medium particle size and density, and is generally composed of quartz sand; The lower layer filter material is composed of heavy filter materials with the smallest particle size and the highest density, such as magnetite. Due to the limitation of the density difference, the selection of filter media for three-layer media filters is basically fixed. The upper layer filter material plays a coarse filtering role, while the lower layer filter material plays a fine filtering role, fully exerting the function of a multimedia filter bed. The effluent quality is significantly better than that of a single-layer filter bed.
Core Filter Material and Combination
| Filter Material Type | Characteristics and Functions | Common Combination Forms |
| Anthracite | Low density, strong pollutant interception ability, coarse filtration of suspended solids | Anthracite+quartz sand (double-layer) |
| Quartz sand | Moderate density, intercepting medium particles | Activated carbon+quartz sand (excluding organic matter) |
| Activated carbon | Adsorbs organic matter, pigments, and odors | Manganese sand+quartz sand (excluding iron and manganese) |
| Magnetite/Garnet | High-density fine particles, fine filtering of small impurities | Three-layer combination (anthracite+quartz sand+magnetite) |
